Privacy
The short version: this site has no accounts and no sign-in, it counts page visits only if you agree to that, and the calculators never send your figures anywhere. The longer version says exactly what that means and where the exceptions are.
Your pay never leaves your browser
Every calculator on this site runs entirely in your own browser. When you type a salary, a spinal column point or your hours, that information is used to work out a figure on your own device and is then gone. It is not sent to us, not written into the web address, not saved, and not logged. There is no server to send it to: the site is a set of static files.
This is why the take-home calculator has no shareable link. A link that carried your salary would put it in your browser history, in the address bar over your shoulder, and in the logs of anyone you sent it to. We would rather lose the feature.
What is stored on your device
One thing: if you turn dark mode on, that choice is saved in your browser’s local storage
so the site does not flash the wrong colours next time. It is the single word
dark. It never leaves your device, and clearing your browser data removes it.
Turning dark mode off deletes it again, so with the site on its normal light setting
nothing at all is stored.
What we do not do
- No heatmaps, no session recording, no profiling. Nothing here watches your mouse, replays your visit or builds a picture of you. The counting described below is page totals, and it happens only if you agree to it.
- No accounts, no newsletter, no forms that submit anywhere.
- No cookies unless you say yes. This site sets none of its own, ever. Google Analytics sets two, and not until you have agreed.
- No selling or sharing of personal data, because none is collected to sell.
- No embedded third-party content — no fonts loaded from elsewhere, no maps, no video players, no social widgets. Everything the page needs to work comes from this domain. The only exceptions are the two counters described below, and neither of them is needed to read a page or use a calculator.
Links to other sites
Every figure here is traced to a published document, and those links point at other people's websites — NHS Employers, gov.uk, the Scottish Government, councils and unions. Following one takes you somewhere with its own privacy practices, which we do not control. We link to sources so you can check us; we do not embed anything from them.
Analytics
There are two counters here and they are not the same kind of thing. One asks your permission and one does not, and the difference is not who runs it or what I do with the numbers — it is whether anything is written to your device.
The one that does not ask
Every page load is counted by Cloudflare Web Analytics. You are not asked about it because it stores nothing on your device — no cookie, no local storage, no fingerprint of your browser — so there is nothing to agree to and nothing to delete. The rule that makes a cookie banner necessary is about writing to your device, not about how sensitive the writing is, and this never writes.
It records that a page was loaded, roughly which country from, which site you arrived from, and how quickly the page rendered. It cannot tell that two visits came from the same person — and that limitation is precisely what makes it consent-free, rather than a claim I am asking you to take on trust.
The one that does ask
Google Analytics tells me more: which pages hold attention, how far down them people read, whether anyone follows the links out to the source circulars. It does that by recognising your browser on a later visit, which takes cookies — which is exactly why it needs your agreement when the other one does not.
Nothing loads until you agree. The tag is not in the page when it is served — it is added only after you answer the banner, which is why the answer has to be per device. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser counts as a refusal on its own, and you will not be asked. Refusing costs you nothing here: every figure, calculator and page behaves identically.
If you do agree, Google receives the address of the page you are on, the kind of device
and browser you are using, and your IP address — which Google says it uses to work out
an approximate location and does not store for Analytics. It sets two cookies,
_ga and _ga_SMX0VZPH2N, so that a second visit is not
counted as a second person.
It does not receive anything you type. The tag is never handed your salary, your hours or your result, and those never appear in a web address either, so there is nothing for it to pick up from one.
What is switched off matters as much as what is on. Google's site search measurement — which reads what it finds in a web address and sends it on — is off, and so is form measurement, because the forms here hold pay figures. What is left is page views, how far down a page you scroll, and clicks on links leaving the site. That last one is deliberate: it is how I can tell whether people follow the links to the source circulars, which is rather the point of the whole site.
You can change your answer whenever you like on the cookies page.
Advertising
There is currently no advertising on this site, and no advertising code is loaded. If that changes, ads will be served by Google, which sets cookies — and they will not load until you have agreed to them. This page and the cookies page will be updated before any of it goes live, not after.
Your rights
UK GDPR gives you rights over personal data held about you — to see it, correct it, have it deleted, and to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. We hold no account, no name, no email address and nothing you have typed into a calculator. The one thing collected in our name is the page counting described above, and only where you agreed to it: it is held by Google on our behalf, it identifies a browser rather than a person, and you can stop it at any time from the cookies page. If you believe otherwise, write to hello@workterms.co.uk and we will look into it.
Where advertising or analytics is running, the data involved is held by Google rather than by us, and Google's own privacy policy and controls apply to it as well as ours.
Changes to this page
If what the site does changes, this page changes first. It carries the date it was last updated at the top, and material changes are also recorded in the corrections log so there is a dated trail rather than a quietly edited page.
